What is the role of engineers in development?

Engineering has historically directed a large share of its effort toward a relatively small part of the global population. This post asks what might change if engineering focused more directly on people without safe water, sanitation and other basic services, and whether the profession has a responsibility to contribute to sustainable development and poverty reduction.
